Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do we take our dog and cat on vacation with us?
A: There are many factors that may determine your decision, such as:
- Length of your vacation
- Mode of travel
- Cost
- Suitability and activities planned
- Destination
- The way your family pet behaves in new environments
- Possible of exposure to diseases in these new environments
- Consideration of the allergies of the people you plan to visit
- The quality of health care your pet may receive in the event of unforseen illness or injury
- The availability of quality boarding facilities should the need arise at your vacation site
- Hotel allowing pets to stay
- If the hotel of your choice does accept pets, is your pet friendly and sociable with other pets,
or will your pet be barking and howling all night long, trying to communicate with the other canine guests?
- What to do with your pet when you wish to go out for fine dining
Should you decide to take your pet with you, please make certain that all of the pet's vaccinations are up to date, including rabies and bordatella (recommended), and that you have the valid vaccination certificate with you. Also ensure that the regulations of the country you visit are met. In some cases, depending on the mode of travel and the country you plan to visit, your pet may require a microchip and a valid health certificate. The microchip # may need to appear on all of the pet's documents.
In some countries, the pets may not be accepted, as there are Import Permits required and quarantines imposed. Always check ahead of time to avoid huge expense.
It is also important to get the Import regulations in writing, as verbal advice may not be up-to-date or accurate or misunderstood. If you do not have the appropriate documentation, you may have problems getting into a country or crossing boarders, causing delays, or possibly ruining your vacation plans.
If you are travelling by car, always make certain that the temperature while driving is comfortable for the pet, but especially when you park the car. It is highly recommended that you DO NOT leave the pet in the car, as the temperature can sky rocket posing a dangerous situation. Always provide ample fresh cold water for your pet, and take comfort stops in appropriate intervals. Make certain your pet is properly leashed, as some comfort stops are close to the highway and the pet may
bolt into traffic.
If the pet will be travelling, be aware that some will have motion sickness. Based on this, it would be important for you to schedule feeding at times that will not upset their tummy.
Should you decide to leave your pet behind, which in many cases is a good idea, as you deserve the best possible holiday and so does your pet, you should carefully consider your options. What is good for you is not necessarily fun for the pet. Pets, in many cases, enjoy the regular routines provided at boarding facilities, which are climate controlled and are year round professional establishments with experienced and trained staff.
Wherever you decide to leave your pet, it is imperative that you make certain that the people you leave your pet with, understand the needs of your pet, have the time to spend quality time with your pet, providing regular food and excercise schedules, providing the correct amount and correct type of food at the prescribed times,
are able to recognize symptoms of ill health and realize what to do in these cases, and that they have years of experience with handling pets.
Q: Should I leave my pet(s) with friends or family?
A: Many people decide to leave their pet with friends and family, in which case you should prepare a " list of needs". Be sure that they can handle all the needs of your pet described above. Check to verify that they have no allergies to cats or dogs. Prepare them for the characteristics of your pet and make them aware of the strength of the pet, so that they are not surprised when they take them for walks.
Check that the friend or relative's pet will get along with your pet and not be aggressive towards your pet, as the owner's pet may feel that the newcomer is invading his territory. Also verify with your choice of animal caregiver, that the pet is not a burden and the person has the physical stamina to deal with the pet's energy level. Another factor is the character of your pet and their tolerance and or reaction to young children.
It happens quite frequently that the people who are taking care of the pet for you, bring the pets to boarding facilities anyway, as they did not anticipate
various situations and workload when they took the project on.
Wherever you leave your pet, you must advise all of your pets needs, medical needs, accurately describing dosage and schedule for medication, and provide enough medication for the entire stay, and stress the importance of the medication applications. Always give your emergency numbers and your veterinarian's number to the animal care givers.
Although feeding seems trivial, it is very easy to make mistakes that can be life-threatening. Always provide clear instructions as to quantity and frequency of the feeding schedule and also provide enough food for the entire stay of the particular food that your pet is used to. It is recommended not to switch food at this time. If you need to do so, it is best if you give some of the regular food to be integrated with the new type of food.
Another option is to have the person take care of your house, take care of your pet. Even though it does work in some instances, your pet is alone for much of the time, and the care giver may not be experienced or available to tend to your pet's particular needs. Once again, many times these pets end up at the kennel anyway, and it may not be the kennel/boarding facility of your choice.
Another option is to check with your vet, if they have space to board your pet and the vet may inform you of a recommended boarding facility which is open 7 days-a- week, providing larger spaces for your pet. Some vets may also provide kenneling service open 7 days a week
In conclusion, wherever you board your pet, make certain that you and your pet are comfortable with the facility and the care givers. The staff should be experienced trained professionals in the animal care field. The facility should be clean, secure and well maintained, well established and in business for many years, and ideally you should have boarded the pet there for short stays prior to a long stay. This gets the pet used to the idea that you will return and you will have experience as to how your pet will react to this situation.
